ANALYSIS OF FACTORS THAT COINCIDE WITH THE OCCURRENCE OF SPECIFIC CRIME TYPES IS USED IN DEVELOPMENT OF PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES.
Abstract
THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE RESEARCH LABORATORIES, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PHILADELPHIA POLICE DEPARTMENT, IS CONDUCTING A STUDY OF CRIME OCCURRENCE IN THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA. THE CRIME BAROMETERS USED IN THIS STUDY WILL BE BASED ON THE JUDGMENT AND EXPERIENCE OF LAWENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND CRIMINOLOGISTS. STATISTICAL DATA SUCH AS WEATHER DATA AND TIME OF DAY WHEN CRIMES ARE COMMITTED (COLLECTED FROM STANDARD STATISTICAL COMPILATIONS AND AVAILABLE LITERATURE AND RECORDS) AND SUBJECTIVE DATA SUCH AS HUNCHES OR JUDGMENTS ON NEIGHBORHOOD TENSION (OBTAINED FROM EXPERIENCED POLICE COMMANDERS) WILL BE SUBJECTED TO COMPUTER ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE FACTORS THAT COINCIDE WITH THE OCCURRENCE OF SPECIFIC TYPES OF CRIME. BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THIS ANALYSIS, A SYSTEM WILL BE DEVELOPED TO INDICATE THE LIKELIHOOD OF CRIME OCCURRENCE FOR THE DAILY SITUATION; THIS WILL LEAD TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PREVENTIVE ACTION STRATEGIES.
