EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MANLINESS, RACE, AND MATRIARCHAL HOMES.
Abstract
THE SAMPLE POPULATION WAS DRAWN FROM A REPRESENTATIVE CROSS-SECTION OF THE POPULATION AT THE FAIRFIELD SCHOOL FOR BOYS, A FACILITY OPERATED BY THE OHIO YOUTH COMMISSION. EACH OF THE SUBJECTS WAS ADMINISTERED A QUESTIONNAIRE WHICH INCLUDED A COMPULSIVE MASCULINITY INDEX, THE LYKKEN SCALE, AND THE ZUCKERMAN SCALE. THE COMPULSIVE MASCULINITY, INDEX WAS USED TO MEASURE THE BOYS' SELF-IDENTIFICATION WITH TOUGH BEHAVIOR AND SEXUAL ATHLETICISM. THE LYKKEN SCALE WAS INCLUDED TO MEASURE IMPULSIVENESS AND PRONENESS TO ACTIVITIES THAT ARE HIGH RISK IN NATURE AND EXCITEMENT ORIENTED. IT ALSO MEASURES GENERAL HOSTILITY. THE ZUCKERMAN SCALE WAS INCLUDED TO MEASURE FIELD DEPENDENCY-TENDENCY TO BE EFFECTED BY ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES INCLUDING PEER PRESSURES. ALSO, EACH RESPONDENT WAS ALSO ASKED TO RATE HIMSELF AND ALL THE OTHER BOYS IN HIS COTTAGE ACCORDING TO HOW MANLY HE CONSIDERED HIMSELF AND EACH OTHER BOY TO BE. DATA FROM THIS STUDY SUGGESTS THAT DELINQUENT BOYS FROM FEMALEBASED HOUSEHOLDS WERE MORE HYPER-MASCULINE THAN DELINQUENTS FROM OTHER TYPES OF HOUSEHOLDS. IT WAS ALSO SHOWN THAT BLACK DELINQUENTS AS A GROUP DEFINE THEMSELVES AS BEING MORE MANLY AND TOUGH THAN WHITE DELINQUENTS IN THE SAME TRAINING SCHOOL. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
