Two hundred fifty-nine general law enforcement agencies were asked to report the lawsuits and agency-investigated complaints their officers had experienced during a 1-year period.
Abstract
Five types of complaints were analyzed with regard to: frequency, distribution among agencies and officers, and sustainment. One hundred sixty-five agencies, representing 3,515 officers, reported that 437 officers received 691 complaints. Twenty-five percent of these were sustained by the agencies, against 4.4 percent of the officers. Sixty-four percent of officers who received complaints received one. Complaints about "verbal conduct" occurred more frequently and for more officers than any other type. 4 tables, 8 notes, and 32 references (Author abstract)
