Abstract

Presents national-level statistics describing all aspects of case processing in the Federal criminal justice system, including arrests by Federal law enforcement agencies, investigations and prosecutions by U.S. attorneys, pretrial release and detention, adjudication in the U.S. district courts, sentencing, appeal of convictions and/or sentences imposed, and corrections, for the 12-month period ending September 30, 2000. Data are provided to BJS by all components of the Federal Justice System. BJS has maintained Federal justice data for the period since 1980. Interactive tabulations of Federal criminal case processing data are available from the Federal Justice Statistics Resource Center.

  • During 2000, 115,574 suspects were arrested by Federal law enforcement agencies for violations of Federal law.
  • During 2000 U.S. attorneys initiated criminal investigations involving 123,559 suspects, and the concluded their investigations of 117,450 suspects.
  • Between 1990 and 2000, the number of offenders on community supervision increased by 17%, from 84,801 during 1990 and 99,264 during 2000.
