PROFESSIONAL WORKERS IN PRISONS, PENITENTIARIES AND REFORMATORIES ARE COMPARED WITH WORKERS IN HALFWAY HOUSES AND PROBATION AND PAROLE OFFICES FOR JOB SATISFACTION AND SELF-CONCEPT.
Abstract
SIXTY-SIX SUBJECTS WERE CHOSEN FROM INSTITUTIONAL SETTINGS AND 76 WERE SELECTED FROM COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS IN SOUTHERN OHIO AND NORTHERN KENTUCKY. EACH SUBJECT WAS ADMINISTERED THE TENNESSEE SELF-CONCEPT SCALE TO MEASURE THE SUBJECTS' SELF-CONCEPT AND THE MINNESOTA SATISFACTION QUESTIONNAIRE WAS USED TO MEASURE JOB SATISFACTION. MEANS, STANDARD DEVIATIONS, CORRELATIONS, AND ANALYSIS OF VARIANCES WERE RUN ON THE DATA. COMPUTATIONS WERE MADE BETWEEN THE GROUPS AND THE MEAN SCORE OF FACTORS WITHIN THE INSTITUTIONAL GROUP WAS DETERMINED. IT WAS FOUND THAT PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN AN INSTITUTIONAL SETTING WERE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE SATISFIED WITH THEIR JOBS THAN THOSE WORKING IN A COMMUNITY SETTING. NO VARIATION WAS FOUND IN SELF-CONCEPT BETWEEN THE GROUPS, AND A POSITIVE SELF-CONCEPT WAS EVIDENCED IN BOTH. IT IS NOTED THAT THE SUBJECTS FROM THE FEDERAL INSTITUTION INVOLVED IN THE STUDY WERE RECENTLY TRANSFERRED FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS, WHICH INVOLVED PROMOTIONS TO HIGHER AND BETTER PAYING POSITIONS. OTHER THAN THIS BRIEF NOTATION, NO ATTEMPT IS MADE TO EXPLAIN THE FINDINGS FROM THE DATA. IMPLICATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY ARE LISTED. SAMPLES OF THE INSTRUMENTS USED ARE INCLUDED, AND TABLES OF DATA ARE PROVIDED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS ALSO PROVIDED. (RCB)
