This workbook suggests concrete procedures for initiating cooperative community efforts to provide comprehensive services to seriously emotionally disturbed children and their families.
Abstract
The workbook offers a procedural outline for collecting and summarizing information to insure planning based on an accurate assessment of community needs. Techniques for group problem-solving and action planning are also described. The workbook is divided into five sections: defining the target population; identifying group participants; determining the target population's needs; surveying service providers; and planning for action. Each section contains a narrative portion about what should happen at that stage of the process and worksheets which can be used to assist community groups in accomplishing the tasks involved. The primary goal of community group efforts is to insure that every child diagnosed as seriously emotionally disturbed has a written, individualized plan which addresses educational, recreational, health, mental health, housing, and other social service needs. Appendixes contain a sample cover letter to accompany a resource information worksheet, a list of administrative linkages in community resources, and an optional planning worksheet.
