This report provides a resource of information on the level of substance abuse occurring in Marion County, illustrating the prevalence and trends of the substance abuse problem.
Abstract
The often-debilitating impact of substance abuse impacts the entire community. Therefore, communities must work together to understand the problem and successfully respond to the problem. This second edition report provides comprehensive statistical information on the level of substance abuse taking place in Marion County, IN. The data illustrate how pervasive the misuse of addictive substances is within the county and identify trends that will assist in guiding how community resources can be best utilized. Report highlights include: (1) marijuana use by 8th and 12th graders remains higher than State and national figures; (2) tobacco use by 8th graders exceeds State and national norms; (3) cocaine seizures increased drastically in 2001, while cannabis seizures decreased significantly; (4) methamphetamine labs investigated in the county increased from 2 in 2001 to 18 in 2002; (5) individuals accessing addiction treatment services continues to increase steadily; (6) alcohol-involved traffic crashes increased for the first time in 3 years; (7) female arrestees testing positive for illegal drugs reached 75 percent for the first time in 2002; and (8) cocaine and marijuana use among inmates at the Marion County Jail remain steady while opiate and methamphetamine use are starting to increase.
