THE SPEAKER, A PARENTS' RIGHTS ADVOCATE, DISCUSSES WAYS IN WHICH PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY CAN BECOME REINVOLVED IN DECISIONS AFFECTING THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THUS APPRISING THEMSELVES OF BOTH EXISTING AND POTENTIAL PROBLEM AREAS.
Abstract
SUGGESTED ARE: SCHOOLS MAILING AVAILABLE DATA ON TARDINESS, EXPULSION, ABSENCES, AND SUSPENSIONS TO PARENTS AND OTHER INTERESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS; PARENTCONDUCTED SURVEYS OF UNREPORTED SCHOOL PROBLEMS WITH VIOLENCE AND VANDALISM; EFFORTS TO ENCOURAGE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS TO ADMIT THE EXISTANCE AND SERIOUSNESS OF ITS PROBLEMS. ALSO RECOMMENDED IS PARENTAL ACTION IN HELPING TO DEFINE THE RIGHTS OF PARENTS, THE RIGHTS OF STUDENTS, AND STUDENT BEHAVIOR CODES TO REPLACE VAGUE SCHOOL BOARD POLICIES. IN ADDITION, EXAMINATION OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND CURRICULA FOR FLEXIBILITY AND ALTERNATIVES FOR THE TEN TO FIFTEEN PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS ALIENATED FROM THE SYSTEM (AND THEREFORE POSSIBLE SOURCES OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION) IS URGED. EMPHASIS IS PLACED NOT ONLY ON CITIZENS BECOMING INVOLVED WITH THE SCHOOLS, BUT ON SCHOOLS BUILDING GOOD RELATIONS WITH PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY.
