A LOOK AT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS INHERENT IN CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS AND AN OUTLINE OF THE VARIOUS METHODS OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
Abstract
THE FIRST MODE OF CITIZEN PARTICIPATION FINDS THE CITIZEN OR COMMUNITY AIDING IN THE REGULATING OF OFFICIAL CONDUCT OF GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES OR CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES. POLICE REVIEW BOARDS AND POLICE ALERT PATROLS WOULD BE EXAMPLES OF SUCH PARTICIPATION. THE SECOND MODE OF CITIZEN PARTICIPATION INVOLVES COMPLEMENTING THE WORK OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONALS IN AGENCIES. IN OTHER WORDS THEY ARE SUPPORTIVE, SUCH AS HONORARY LUNCHEONS. THE THIRD MODE DIRECTS ITS ATTENTION AT PREVENTION ENDEAVORS COMPLETELY. THIS MAY BE SUPPORTIVE, OR IT MAY BE REGULATORY. POLICE LIAISON OFFICER ARE AN EXAMPLE OF THIS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
