This paper provides an overview of North Dakota's community- based corrections programs, which operate primarily in rural areas.
Abstract
In an effort to promote the involvement of the community in community corrections, North Dakota has established Community Corrections Boards (CCB). CCB's are composed of a variety of volunteers from the community and have the primary responsibility of advising and assisting corrections officials with the development, implementation, and evaluation of self-supporting community-based programming. This paper briefly describes some of the programs developed by CCB's in the rural communities of North Dakota. The Community Volunteer Program promotes and trains volunteers to participate in the following corrections areas: community service restitution program, juvenile probation program, adult parole/probation, victim-witness assistance, institutional programs, and human service/other programs. Other community corrections programs described in this paper are the Community Service and Restitution Program, the Victim/Offender Mediation Program, community confinement and intensive supervision, drug offender caseload and on-site drug testing, and electronic monitoring.
