Case studies use a community field approach to examine correctional organizations as units of community structure, the operation of community corrections organizations, and community corrections in change.
Abstract
The book's chief concern is the systematic examination of the connections between various community settings and various community correctional programs. The general thesis is that community structure is comprised largely of interacting organizational forces and that the location of community correctional programs among those organizational forces will shape the internal nature of the correctional program. Part I presents three views of correctional programs as part of community structure. Case studies address the development of a halfway house, the use of home confinement and electronic monitoring in the United States, and accountability in a decentralized system (the U.S. Federal probation system). Part II presents three studies of the internal technology of correctional organizations in various community settings. All three chapters demonstrate that correctional programs are shaped by their environment. Part III provides three research studies of community correctional programs undergoing change. 240 references, name and subject indexes, chapter notes, discussion questions.
