SURVEY OF PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO FACILITATE THE TRANSITION OF ADULT OFFENDERS FROM PRISON BACK INTO SOCIETY VIA COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE SURVEY ATTEMPTED TO INDICATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS, IDENTIFY THE SOURCES OF FUNDING AND NEED FOR LEGISLATION, DETERMINE THE VARIOUS TYPES OF PROGRAMS OFFERED AND PEOPLE SERVED, AND TO IDENTIFY THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM AREAS. IN ORDER TO AID THOSE STATES WHICH ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF SETTING UP THEIR PROGRAMS, THE AUTHORS MAKE SEVERAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION AND EXPERIENCE. THEY SUGGEST AS SOURCES OF ASSISTANCE THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS, THE INTERNATIONAL HALFWAY HOUSE ASSOCIATION, PRIVATE AGENCIES, AND AMERICAN CURRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION. AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAMS IS LEAA. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT STATE PLANNING AGENCIES GIVE HIGH PRIORITY TO COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS AND CONSIDER LEAA IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER SOURCES OF FUNDING.
