The Middlesex County, New Jersey, Drug Court Program combines differentiated case management (DCM) techniques with a community supervision program providing early and intensive court intervention.
Abstract
All drug cases are screened within five days of arrest and assigned either to Track A, in which the defendant is incarcerated for a mandated period, or Track B, for less serious cases. Many cases are disposed of during the preindictment conference, held within five to seven days of arrest. Cases not settled at this conference are referred to the grand jury for indictment within 28 days and tried within 60 days of indictment. Track B cases which are not settled at the conference and are subsequently set for trial, are assigned to Track C. The program's community component has developed a large network of local corporations, churches, colleges, and volunteers to provide employment, education, counseling, monitoring, and support for drug offenders enrolled in the program.
