INTENDED FOR INDIVIDUAL USERS AND STATE CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES, THE REPORT PRESENTS STATISTICAL INFORMATION ON THE INMATES ADMITTED TO, RELEASED FROM, AND CONFINED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA BUREAU OF CORRECTION FOR 1978.
Abstract
THE PURPOSES OF THE REPORT ARE TO (1) GIVE CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS AND PLANNERS SUMMARY DATA INVOLVING INMATE POPULATION MOVEMENTS AND COUNTS OF INMATES IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, (2) PROVIDE LEGISLATORS AND JUDICIAL PERSONNEL WITH A YEARLY RECORD, AND (3) SERVE AS THE BUREAU'S OFFICIAL DOCUMENT FOR STATISTICAL CORRECTIONAL INFORMATION. THE 20 STATISTICAL TABLES COVER SUCH SUBJECTS AS INMATE POPULATIONS AND THEIR RACIAL COMPOSITION, COURT COMMITMENTS (INCLUDING RECIDIVISTS), DISCHARGES, AND SENTENCE STATUS OF THE PRISON POPULATION. MAJOR FINDINGS INDICATE THAT (1) THE PRISON POPULATION ROSE BY 3.2 PERCENT IN COMPARISON TO THE COMMITTED POPULATION COUNT OF 1977, (2) THE NUMBER OF COURT COMMITMENTS DECREASED BY 8.97 PERCENT FROM THAT OF 1977, (3) THE NUMBER OF CONDITIONAL RELEASE DECREASED BY 9.8 PERCENT WHILE THE NUMBER OF RELEASED INMATES WAS ALMOST UNCHANGED, (4) AND THE NUMBER OF ESCAPES DECLINED BY 20.55 PERCENT.
