COMMON MEDICAL PROBLEMS OF JUVENILES IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES ARE IDENTIFIED IN THIS AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION PAMPHLET.
Abstract
BASED ON SEVERAL STUDIES OF MEDICAL PROBLEMS IN POPULATIONS OF JUVENILES IN VARIOUS CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, THE FOLLOWING PERCENTAGES OF INMATES HAD THESE DISEASES: (1) SEIZURE DISORDERS, 2.9 PERCENT; (2) EAR, NOSE, AAND THROAT PROBLEMS, 5.4-12.4 PERCENT; (3) RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS, 1.8-12.8 PERCENT; (4) GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS, 0.8-3.9 PERCENT; (5) OBESITY, 1.0-5.1 PERCENT; AND (6) SEXUALLY TRANSMISSIBLE DISEASES--TRICHOMONAS VAGINALIS (20.3 PERCENT), YEAST (10.4 PERCENT), AND MIXED INFECTIONS (4.3 PERCENT); OTHER DISEASES FOUND WERE MUSCULOSKELETAL PROBLEMS, SKIN PROBLEMS, TRAUMA, ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE, DENTAL PROBLEMS, AND LEARNING DISABILITIES (AS HIGH AS 25-50 PERCENT AMONG SOME INMATE POPULATIONS). ALTHOUGH MEDICAL PROBLEMS ARE REPORTED AS SEPARATE ENTITIES, THEIR INTERACTION IN GIVEN CASES IS COMPLEX. MANIFESTATIONS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS AND THE HIGH INCIDENCE OF DRUG EXPERIMENTATION ARE EXAMPLES OF SUCH COMPLEX INTERACTION. REFERENCES AND FOOTNOTES ARE PROVIDED. (RCB)
