This annual report of the South African Police (SAP) Commissioner contains organizational and crime rate information for the year 1992.
Abstract
The chapters are devoted to the Supporting Services Division, the Human Resources Management Division, the Visible Policing Division, the Internal Stability Division, and the Crime Combating and Investigation Division. The need for innovative approaches to community-supported policing is primary. For this purpose, the force established a new division, Community Relations, on December 1, 1992. On the same day, top management posts at the Head Office were significantly reduced, while those in the Witwatersrand, Western Cape, and Natal regions were given greater importance and manpower. Also, two Deputy Commissioners were appointed. Since 1987, armed robbery has increased by 69.97 percent, murder by 63.95 percent, fraud by 79.9 percent, and vandalism by 36.51 percent. SAP solved 53.2 percent of the more than 1.7 million serious crimes reported to them. The most prominent serious crimes were economic crimes; politically motivated violent crimes constituted only 0.72 percent. Figures
