Abstract
Available research indicates that persons' color preferences vary by age ranges. Researchers believe these color preference variances are related to psychophysiological changes. Studies also indicate a correlation between color preferences and the symbolism various cultures attach to specific colors. A review of human reactions to particular colors (blue, red, green, violet, orange, and yellow) indicates that they have distinctive effects on psychological and physiological states, temperature perceptions, and perceptions of space and time. Current research suggests that colors in correctional facilities should be selected to facilitate emotional states and behaviors appropriate for various facility areas. A chart indicates desired behaviors, psychological perceptions (space and time), and temperature perceptions (cool or warm) appropriate for various correctional facility areas; color accents in order of preference are suggested for each of the areas. 24 references.
