Abstract
THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE PORTRAIT OF AN IDEAL POLICE OFFICER, INFERRED FROM CRITICISMS OF POLICE CONDUCT. THE NATURE OF POLICE FUNCTIONS, PROFESSIONS ENGAGED IN MAKING DECISIONS SIMILAR TO THOSE MADE BY POLICE, THE CONCLUSIONS OF ADVOCATES FOR POLICE EDUCATION, POLICE EDUCATION IN THE ACADEMY, THE VALUES AND ATTITUDES DEVELOPED IN COLLEGE, THEIR ENDURING POWER, THE IMPACT OF BUREAUCRATIC ORGANIZATIONS ON SUCH VALUES AND THE PROBABLE DIRECTION OF ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE RESULTING FROM AN INCREASED LEVEL OF EDUCATION AMONG EMPLOYEES, THE VALIDITY OF MR.
