DATA WERE GATHERED TO ASSIST IN IDENTIFYING THE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES NEEDED BY INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL IN CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS IN A MULTIDISCIPLINARY SETTING IN TEXAS.
Abstract
SIX QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DEVELOPED AND ADMINISTERED TO SEVEN SAMPLE GROUPS: INMATES, PAROLEES, TEACHERS, INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT PERSONNEL, COLLEGE PROFESSORS AND TEACHERS OF INMATES, AND SELECTED COLLEGE PROFESSORS AND INSTITUTIONAL PERSONNEL. THE QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DESIGNED TO DETERMINE THE TYPES OF VOCATIONAL AND ACADEMIC COURSE WORK THEY CONSIDERED RELEVANT AND SUITABLE TO THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING. THE GROUPS WERE QUESTIONED ON SUCH COURSE TOPICS AS DRAFTING, PSYCHOLOGY, CRIMINOLOGY, MUSIC APPRECIATION, CHEMISTRY, AND CARPENTRY. TABLES PROVIDE BREAKDOWNS OF THE GROUP RESPONSES, LISTING THE TOPICS AS THEY RANK IN ORDER OF INTEREST. ALTHOUGH THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT DISPARITIES IN THE ATTITUDES OF THE GROUPS ON CERTAIN COURSE TOPICS, A COMPOSITE OF THE RATINGS SHOW THAT VOCATIONAL COURSES (I.E., DRAFTING AND CARPENTRY) AND SUCH ACADEMIC COURSES AS PSYCHOLOGY, SPANISH, CRIMINOLOGY, ENGLISH, GOVERNMENT, AND GENERAL ECONOMICS WERE THE MOST POPULAR SUBJECTS; OTHER POPULAR SUBJECTS WERE SOCIOLOGY, AMERICAN HISTORY, PHYSICS, BIOLOGY, GEOLOGY, DANCE, FAMILY LIFE NUTRITION, AND MEAL PLANNING AND SERVICE. A LIST OF SPECIFIC COURSE TOPICS, DEVELOPED AS A RESULT OF THE SURVEY FINDINGS, ARE PRESENTED ALONG WITH SUBJECT CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED FOR THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONAL AREAS: HUMAN RELATIONS, CRIMINOLOGY, HEALTH EDUCATION, SOCIAL PROBLEMS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, SPANISH, PSYCHOLOGY OF THE PERSONALITY, ECONOMICS, PSYCHOLOGY OF ADULT LEARNING, ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, AND VOCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY. FOUR QUESTIONNAIRES ARE APPENDED, INDICATING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF RESPONSES FROM PAROLEES, INMATES, TEACHERS, AND INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT PERSONNEL. ALSO APPENDED IS A LIST OF CONCEPTS (I.E., COMMUNICATIONS, USE OF LEISURE TIME, GROUP DYNAMICS, HUMAN RELATIONS) WHICH, ACCORDING TO THE SURVEY, INSTRUCTORS IN AN INSTITUTIONAL SETTING SHOULD EXHIBIT AND BE ABLE TO TEACH.
