This manual introduces a method of cognitive processing therapy for rape victims.
Abstract
The first section discusses rape and its aftermath in terms of symptoms and recovery patterns, information processing theory and relevant treatments, and diagnosis and assessment. The treatment method described here consists of 12 sessions covering an introduction and education phase, meaning of the event, identification of thoughts and feelings, remembering the rape, identification of stuck points, challenging questions, faulty thinking patterns, safety issues, trust issues, power and control issues, esteem issues, and intimacy issues. Special considerations are explored in terms of group versus individual therapy, tips on running groups, client characteristics that may affect treatment, therapist considerations, and results of cognitive processing therapy. 54 references
