Abstract
Major findings from this report regarding the level of gang activity in Coconino County, AZ in 2009 include: all three agencies in the county that responded to the survey reported active gang presence within their jurisdictions, with an estimated 408 active gang members in all three jurisdictions; one agency reported that gangs in their jurisdiction were expanding their membership and scope of activities; one agency reported that gangs in their jurisdiction had a high level of involvement in felonious assault, fraud, identity theft, and vandalism/graffiti/tagging, while two agencies reported high levels of gang involvement in the distribution of drugs; the Bloods and Hells Angels were the only gangs with high levels of involvement in the county; and enforcement was listed as the most effective gang intervention strategy used by law enforcement agencies in the county. This report from the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission presents the 2009 gang threat assessment for Coconino County, AZ. Law enforcement agencies in the county were surveyed in the spring of 2010 to determine the level of gang activity in their county. The survey is modeled after the National Gang Threat Assessment and contains questions for law enforcement agencies dealing with the presence of gangs within their jurisdictions, the level of gang activity, the involvement of gang members in crime and illegal drug distribution, the extent of cross-gang coordination, and law enforcement strategies targeting gang members.
