A U.S. House of Representatives committee in July 1985 received oral and written testimony regarding trends and patterns in the use of cocaine in the United States and the Federal Government's response to the problem of cocaine abuse.
Abstract
Testimony came from recovered cocaine abusers, a representative of the National Cocaine Hotline, Federal and State government officials, and a treatment professional. They noted the sharp rise in recent years in deaths due to cocaine overdoses, the declining price of cocaine, and its increasing availability. They also discussed the peer pressures to use drugs, the relationships between cocaine use and other drug use, the adverse effects of cocaine, prevention programs, treatment programs, and the use of the national hotline. Among Federal efforts detailed were research efforts under the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a public awareness campaign through the media, and the initiation of Just Say No clubs. Written materials include copies of research monographs and a discussion of cocaine use among athletes.
