THE ORDER, SEVERITY, AND RESOLUTION OF PATHOLOGIC CHANGES IN MONKEYS EXPOSED TO CS, A RIOT CONTROL AGENT.
Abstract
WHEN MONKEYS WERE EXPOSED TO CS, THE FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE. THE MOST PROMINENT LESIONS SEEN AFTER THE TWO LOWER DOSES WERE MILD PULMONARY CONGESTION, BRONCHORRHEA, EMPHYSEMA, AND ATELECTASIS. THESE LESIONS CLEARED BY 72 HR BUT RECURRED AT ONE WK AND 30 DAYS. ORAL AND NASAL DISCHARGES AND DYSPNEA APPEARED EARLY AFTER HEAVIER EXPOSURE. THEY WERE MOST SEVERE BETWEEN 12 AND 24 HOURS AND WERE RESOLVED BY 72 HOURS. PNEUMONIA, EMPHYSEMA, AND ATELECTASIS WERE PRESENT ONE WK AND 30 30 DAYS AFTER EXPOSURE. SIGNIFICANT LESIONS WERE SEEN RADIOGRAPHICALLY ONLY IN THOSE MONKEYS EXPOSED TO VERY HEAVY DOSAGES. THESE LESIONS PARALLELED THOSE SEEN ON NECROPSY. EDEMA APPEARED BY 12 HOURS, PEAKED BETWEEN 24 AND 48 HOURS, AND CLEARED BY ONE WEEK. EMPHYSEMA AND BRONCHIOLITIS WERE PRESENT ONE WEEK AND 30 DAYS AFTER EXPOSURE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
