Abstract
The first section on police history and role covers the historical roots of police behavior in Chicago between 1890 and 1925, historical trends in police reform, the 1968 report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, the evolving strategy of policing, the use and misuse of history in recent police patrol analysis, popular conceptions about the nature of police work, and police use of force. The second section on police discretion addresses police professionalism, the social organization of arrest, public perceptions of the police role, policing styles, and administrative interventions related to police shooting discretion. The third section on police strategies deals with the police mandate, a preventive patrol experiment in Kansas City, the criminal investigation process, a domestic violence experiment in Minneapolis, team policing, problem-oriented policing, community policing principles, and the relationship between police and neighborhood safety.
