Policy and procedures for handling child sexual abuse cases among agencies in Denver city and county pertain to the initial investigation, medical examinations, court involvement, and treatment and supervision.
Abstract
The purposes of the procedures and policy are to specify responsibilities and establish uniform procedures of child sexual abuse cases, facilitate cooperation among individuals and agencies involved in the problem, lessen victim traumatization, reduce recidivism, and preserve the family unit. After defining child sexual abuse, the manual lists physical and behavioral indicators of child sexual abuse. Procedures for the initial investigation address mandatory reporting and response to a report. Procedures for medical examinations focus on where the examination is to be performed, determination of the timing and need for the examination, and minimization of the number of examinations performed. Court procedures pertain to both the juvenile court and the criminal court. Treatment and supervision procedures encompass the use of volunteers in family treatment, treatment and case management for family members, and probation supervision for offenders.
