This report on a survey of 3,316 jail and detention facilities in the United States, conducted between March 20 and December 20, 1990, is designed to assess the status, interests, and needs of jails and correctional industries.
Abstract
The survey yielded 749 respondents. Section I presents general data on all respondents, general data on jurisdictions currently operating jail industries, and a summary of specific information on jail industries currently operating. Section II provides reasons given by some jurisdictions as to why they are not operating jail industries and a list of jurisdictions that reportedly are not operating jail industries. Section III presents a mailing list of jurisdictions considering start up of jail industries and general data on jurisdictions considering start up of jail industries. Section IV contains a mailing list of jurisdictions operating jail industries; general data on jurisdictions operating jail industries by facility; and specific data on jail industries currently operating, alphabetized by facility and industry type within each facility. Data on jail industries currently operating include opening dates for industry operations, sources providing funding for start-up, opposition encountered, criteria for selection of products or services, industry types, product lines or services, plans for future development, eligibility requirements for inmate participation, incentives provided inmate employees, and training topics for employees.
