Abstract
THE CENSUS COVERED ALL RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES OPERATED BY STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS FOR DELINQUENT JUVENILES THAT WERE IN OPERATION AT THE TIME THE CENSUS WAS CONDUCTED (NOVEMBER 1973), THAT HAD BEEN IN OPERATION AT LEAST 1 MONTH PRIOR TO THE CENSUS REFERENCE DATE (JUNE 30, 1973), AND THAT HAD A RESIDENT POPULATION OF AT LEAST 50 PERCENT JUVENILES. THE ADVANCE REPORT INCLUDES NUMBER AND TYPE OF FACILITIES; WHETHER LOCALLY OR STATE ADMINISTERED NUMBER OF FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME PAYROLL AND NONPAYROLL EMPLOYEES; CAPITAL, OPERATING, AND PER CAPITA EXPENDITURES; AND AVERAGE END-OF-QUARTER POPULATION. ALL STATISTICS ARE FOR EACH STATE AND EACH OF THE 10 LEAA REGIONS. ALSO, SOME COMPARISONS ARE SHOWN BETWEEN 1971 AND 1973 DATA. THE FINAL REPORT FOR THIS CENSUS, TO BE PUBLISHED IN SPRING 1976, WILL PROVIDE THESE STATISTICS IN GREATER DETAIL AND WILL COVER ADDITIONAL ITEMS SUCH AS OFFENSES, JUVENILE AGE RANGES, AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY, AND SELECTED DATA FOR 1972.
