THE TOTAL OF 200 FAMILIES OF ALCOHOLICS WERE STUDIED ON THE BASIS OF POLICE RECORDS. NO SIGNIFICANT LINKS WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE ALCOHOLISM OF PARENTS AND THE DELINQUENCY OF CHILDREN.
Abstract
THE TOTAL OF 487 CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS WERE STUDIED FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. THE BOYS WERE MORE OFTEN DELAYED IN THEIR STUDIES AT SCHOOL THAN THH GIRLS. APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THE CHILDREN SYSTEMATICALLY PLAYED TRUANT. AS MANY AS 35 PERCENT OF 14 TO 17-YEAR-OLD GIRLS SHOWED SYMPTOMS OF SEXUAL DEOMORALIZATION. IN 1975, WHEN 270 BOYS AND GIRLS WERE OVER 18 YEARS OLD, AND THEIR AVERAGE AGE WAS 20, THE DATA SHOWED THAT AS MANY AS 55 PERCENT OF THE BOYS HAD BEEN TRIED WHILE STILL JUVENILES OR HAD BEEN CONVICTED AFTER AGE 17. HOWEVER, 62 PERCENT WERE CONVICTED ONLY ONCE. ONLY 15 PERCENT OF THE GIRLS HAD HAD COURT APPEARENCES, NONE WAS REGISTERED AS A PROSTITUTE. ABOUT HALF OF THE BOYS AND 79 PERCENT OF THE GIRLS WERE NEITHER CONVICTED NOR ARRESTED BY THE POLICE BECAUSE OF INTOXICATION. THUS, A CONSIDERABLE GROUP OF THE YOUNG ADULTS--CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS--DID NOT REVEAL SYMPTOMS OF SOCIAL MALADJUSTMENT. HOWEVER, THE FULL IMPACT OF THE STUDY COULD BE ESTABLISHED ONLY ON THE BASIS OF DETAILED ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, WHICH WERE NOT DONE AT THIS TIME. TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED.
