Ways in which public school staff can constructively respond to child abuse are suggested.
Abstract
Steps for handling the abuse of a student by another student on school premises are listed, including the following: Obtain statements from eyewitnesses; contact the appropriate school official and call the county social or human services agency; notify the victim's parents and the perpetrator's parents; and talk with the victim and with the perpetrator, possibly through an outside agency. The text possibly through an outside agency. The text of the 1983 Wisconsin Act 172 is included, as are statutes defining crimes against life and body and crimes against sexual morality. In addition, the text of the 1983 Wisconsin Act 17 is provided. Physical and behavioral indicators of sexual abuse are described, including difficulty in walking or sitting; torn, stained, or bloody underclothinq; complaints of pain or itching in the genital area; and bruises or bleeding in external genital, vaginal, or anal areas. Techniques for interviewing the abused child are examined, and some 'do's' and 'don'ts' in interviewing parents are listed. Curricula and training resources are noted, and a 48-item bibliography is supplied. Information on 10 films and filmstrips on sexual abuse is provided.
