Sixteen research papers, essays, and book reviews examine the nature and incidence of child sexual abuse in the United States and the United Kingdom, the interventions taking place by child protective agencies, children's typical reactions to sexual abuse, and treatment and prevention approaches.
Abstract
Survey data and record reviews produced analyses of the types and prevalence of child sexual abuse and victim and offender characteristics affecting the patterns of abuse. Data on 10 cases revealed the characteristics of grandfather-granddaughter incest. The role of vaginal inspections during physical examinations as a means of identifying abuse is outlined. Children's typical reactions to sexual abuse are grouped into a five-part syndrome of accommodation. Data from the national reporting system for child abuse and neglect shows the use of foster care placements and criminal charges. Professional intervention with victims and families is described in terms of its effects on relationships among family members and its use in an extended family long after the incest has occurred. Also discussed are adaptation in later life of adolescent perpetrators of sexual abuse and school programs to prevent child sexual abuse within the family. Data tables, chapter references, 58-item bibliography, and 3 book reviews.
