THIS PUBLIC INFORMATION AND EDUCATION FILM DISCUSSES THE 98-99 PER CENT OF PEDOPHILIA (ABNORMAL CHILD-ADULT SEXUAL RELATIONS) CASES WHICH DO NOT INVOLVE MENTALLY ILL PERSONS OR THOSE WHO WOULD HARM CHILDREN.
Abstract
A GROUP OF YOUNG CHILDREN, A PSYCHOLOGIST, A CHILD PSYCHIATRIST, PARENTS, A POLICE OFFICER, AND A SOCIAL WORKER DISCUSS THE MYTHS WHICH PEOPLE REPEAT ABOUT CHILD MOLESTERS AND CONTRASTS THEM WITH FACTS. TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDED CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OFFENDERS, AGES OF CHILDREN INVOLVED, THE MOST LIKELY PLACE OF INCIDENT OCCURRENCE (BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CHILD'S IMMEDIATE ENVIRONMENT) AND THE CHILD-OFFENDER RELATIONSHIP. SUGGESTIONS ARE ALSO GIVEN ON PARENTAL REACTIONS TO A CHILD'S REPORT OF POSSIBLE MOLESTATION AND POLICE HANDLING OF THE PARENTS, THE CHILD, AND THE SUSPECTED OFFENDER. THREE GROUPS OF CHILD MOLESTERS ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED: THE ADOLESCENT (MID TO LATE TEENS) PEDOPHILE; THE MIDDLE-AGE (35-39 YEARS OLD) PEDOPHILE; AND THE SENESCENT (OLDER) PEDOPHILE.
