This hearing held by a U.S. House of Representatives committee in March 1984 focused on the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of children and on strategies for preventing child abuse and neglect.
Abstract
Testimony came from the executive director of the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse, the executive directors of Parents Anonymous organizations, health care providers, and individual parents. Prepared statements, letters, technical reports, and other supplementary materials came from speakers, other individuals, and organizations concerned with the problem of child abuse. Recommendations emphasized the need for a wide variety of strategies for preventing the problem. Programs suggested included support programs for new parents, parent education, child and family screening and treatment, child care opportunities, programs for abused children and young adults, life-skills training, self-help groups, family support service, workplace support, and public information and education. The approaches used by Parents Anonymous and Parents United, the use of crisis nurseries, a hospital-based initiative, and a team approach involving the police and other agencies are described.
