Written for nurses working in all settings, this manual aims to provide a general reference source about the nature of child abuse, legal issues regarding reporting and documentation, issues related to nursing practice, and the use of multidisciplinary teams and community resources in dealing with child abuse and neglect.
The broad definitions and specific indicators of physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional maltreatment are presented. A discussion of legal issues focuses on legal responsibilities, how to report, court appearances, and outcomes for families. Advice is given on how nurses should deal with their personal attitudes and educational needs. Interventions in maternity and neonatal units, emergency units, pediatric inpatient units, and community health nursing are discussed. The use of interdisciplinary teams based in the hospital or community is examined. Community resources outlined include child protection and family service agencies, Ontario official health agencies, day care programs and nursery schools, child assessment centers, the police, parenting courses, and volunteer services.
