State and national data are tabulated to illustrate the wide variations in how States address child abuse and neglect and to stimulate discussion at all levels about child victims of abuse, neglect, and abandonment.
Abstract
The data are presented according to three graphic formats: (1) State-by-State tables in traditional alphabetical order; (2) State-by-State tables in descending order by child population; and (3) descending order bar graphs. The tables and figures provide statistics on child abuse and neglect rates per 1,000 children in each State, comparisons across time to show trend data, and State child welfare budgets and related financial information. Detailed data are provided on child abuse and neglect for the 1984-1993 period, out-of-home care, adoption, risk factors for child abuse and neglect, and possibilities for prevention. The focus is on child sexual abuse, child abuse fatalities, kinship care, independent living, child welfare, family characteristics, and family support. 53 tables and 45 figures
