A resource outline developed at the University of Arizona identifies procedures for handling the death of a police officer.
Abstract
Procedures for handling the death of an on-duty police officer require an incident description, determination of what occurred, notifications, funeral arrangements, media coverage, ongoing criminal and internal investigations, and initial and followup counseling. Additionally, it is necessary to review all existing rules and procedures associated with the responses of officers and the department to an officer involved in a shooting, to assess the department's performance following the funeral and related memorial services, and to deal with the post-shooting trauma syndrome.
