Abstract
METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NEW POLICING PROCEDURES NEED TO BE DEVISED IF SPECIFIC RESULTS OF CHANGES ARE TO BE MEASURED. CRIME STATISTICS AND ACCIDENT STATISTICS, BECAUSE THEY ARE INFLUENCED BY MANY FACTORS OUTSIDE THE CONTROL OF THE POLICE, CAN ONLY GIVE AN INDICATION OF WORK LOAD IN THE JUDGEMENT OF THE AUTHOR. THE HOPE IS EXPRESSED THAT POLICE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BRANCH CAN PRODUCE ACCURATE MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS FOR EACH POLICE FUNCTION.
