Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to analyze a collection of 29 black raw photocopy toners and photocopies processed from machines available in India using respective toners collected from 8 manufacturers.
Abstract
Toners were categorized into six groups, each group including more than one toner based on major copolymer types. The analysis considered the structural diagnosis and chemical constituents of toners, based on characteristic infrared absorption bands; their group functionalities or spectral matches from the position, shape, and relative peak intensity of bands in comparison with the intensity of other bands in the same spectrum; and the nature of the absorbing material, i.e., polymers. Good sensitivity, reproducibility, and a high level of discrimination were observed in the toner analysis. Spectral matches between standard toner powder and toner extracted from the respective copied document for functional groups were achieved. 23 references, 2 tables, and 6 figures
