FINDINGS OF AN EXPLORATORY RESEARCH STUDY OF SPECIFIC MODES OF BEHAVIORAL AND EMOTIONAL RESPONSES IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING, DURING, AND AFTER THE ASSAULT AND THE LONG TERMS EFFECTS OF RAPE ON LATER ADJUSTMENT.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH SAMPLE WAS 70 VICTIMS OF FORCIBLE RAPE SEEN BY THE BETH ISRAEL RAPE CRISIS INTERVENTION PROGRAM IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS DURING ITS FIRST YEAR. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES EMERGENCY ROOM MEDICAL CARE AND COUNSELING, REFERRAL, AND VICTIM FOLLOW-UP SERVICES. DATA COLLECTED ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VICTIMS, THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ASSAULTS, AND REACTIONS AND COPING BEHAVIOR AFTER THE ASSAULT ARE DISCUSSED ALONG WITH THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL INTERVENTION AND COUNSELING. PRIOR RESEARCH IN THIS AREA IS ALSO BRIEFLY SUMMARIZED. REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED.
