These figures, tables, and narratives describe the characteristics of the new felony admissions to California correctional institutions during 1989.
Abstract
The number of felon new admissions from court increased 94.4 percent from 17,602 in 1984 to 34,226 in 1989. More than half of the new admissions were under the age of 30 in 1989. In addition, the number of drug offender admissions reached a record high of 12,962, a 433.9 percent increase over 1984. Moreover, the number of Mexican-American new admissions more than doubled from 5,034 in 1984 to 10,640 in 1989. Furthermore, the admission rate for felon new admissions was 117.8 per 100,000 population, the highest ever experienced by the California Department of Corrections. Finally, Los Angeles accounted for 41.1 percent of the new felon admissions in 1989.
