STATISTICAL REVIEW OF AGED AND NON-AGED NORTH CAROLINA PRISONERS FOR SUCH FACTORS AS INTELLECTUAL ABILITY, EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, JOB SKILLS, AND PRIOR PRISON SENTENCES.
Abstract
AGED PRISONERS, 60 YEARS AND OLDER, ARE COMPARED TO NON-AGED PRISONERS, 16-59, IN THIS SURVEY WHICH IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN NORTH CAROLINA. OLDER PRISONERS WERE FOUND TO HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER LEVELS OF INTELLIGENCE, AND THEIR EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS WERE ALSO LOWER. FIFTY-THREE PERCENT NEVER GOT BEYOND THE FIFTH GRADE. SUCH PRISONERS WERE ALSO MORE LIKELY TO BE DIVORCED OR WIDOWED, AND WERE MORE FREQUENTLY CLASSIFIED AS HAVING NO GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT AT THE TIME OF THEIR ARRESTS. THEY ALSO HAD SERVED MORE PREVIOUS SENTENCES THAN NON-AGED PRISONERS....BS
