THIS REPORT ON LABORATORY METHODS FOR CHARACTERIZING EXPLOSIVES' TRACES AFTER AN EXPLOSION DESCRIBES TESTS FOR NITRAMINES, AROMATIC NITRODERIVATIVES, AND EXPLOSIVES LESS COMMONLY USED IN CRIMINAL ATTACKS IN FRANCE.
Abstract
TESTING FOR NITRAMINES INVOLVES SEPARATION OF HEXOGEN AND OCTOGEN, DETECTING THEM IN THE PRESENCE OF NITROGLYCERINE AND PENTAERYTHRITOL TETRANITRITE, AND IDENTIFICATION OF TETRYL IN THE PRESENCE OF 2, 4, 6-TRINITROBENZALDEHYDE. TESTING FOR AROMATIC NITRODERIVATIVES INVOLVES USE OF VARIOUS SOLVENTS TO IDENTIFY TOLITE AND ITS ISOMERS, USE OF TWO SORTING CHROMATOGRAMS TO IDENTIFY TOLITE DEGRADATION PRODUCTS, AND IDENTIFICATION OF DINITROTOLUENE ISOMERS. EXPLOSIVES LESS COMMONLY USED IN CRIMINAL ATTACKS IN FRANCE INCLUDE NITROBENZENE DERIVATIVES, NITRONAPHTHALENE DERIVATIVES, 2,4, 6-TRINITROPHENOL, 2,6-DINITROPHENOL, AND PETROLEUM NAPHTHA. FOOTNOTES, TABLES SHOWING RESULTS USING DIFFERENT SOLVENTS, ILLUSTRATIONS OF CHROMATOGRAMS, A LIST OF SOLVENTS, AND A LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
