Some of the programs and training of the Fairfield University campus security department are discussed.
Abstract
Since Fairfield University enrolled its first students in 1947, the need for a well trained, professional security force has increased. Officers in the security department now must complete a 40-hour basic training course. In-service training programs ranging from criminal and accident investigations, to elevator rescue and self-defense courses are also provided. Officers must meet rigorous firearms qualification standards. Fairfield's security staff has been presented with unique demands and opportunities to improve their skills over the years caused by visits to the campus from major celebrities and dignitaries. In 1992, Fairfield became one of the first universities in Connecticut to initiate a bicycle patrol program for its security department. Other innovations implemented include a residence hall card access system, a whistle defense program and an emergency call box phone system. The need for gaining and retaining the confidence and respect of the community is emphasized.
