The National Center for State Courts studied the efforts of State court systems to automate their trial courts on a statewide basis; the focus was on managing the process of statewide automation rather than on technology issues.
Abstract
Project staff conducted surveys and interviews to gather statistical data and generate State court automation profiles. persons interviewed at the State level included chief justices or other designated supreme court jusstices, State court administrators, judicial information system directors, training managers and staff, analysts, and technical support personnel. At the trial court level, project staff spoke with judges, court administrators and clerks, supervisors, technical staf, and end users. Project findings are discussed in relation to difficulties in achieving statewide court automatiion, issues in automation management, funding, the use of statewide committees and task fouces to organize and promote automation, testing and piloting statewide automation systems, training, and support. Appendixes contain State court automation profiles and the statewide automation profiles and the statewide automation survey questionnaire. Tables and figures
