Facilities were included in the census if they were staffed with State employees; housed primarily State prisoners; were physically, functionally, and administratively separate from other facilities; and were operational on the reference date, June 30, 1984. The census covered the following State-operated adult correctional facilities: prisons; prison farms; reception, diagnostic, and classification centers; road camps; forestry and conservation camps; youthful offender facilities (except in California); vocational training facilities; drug and alcohol treatment facilities; and State-operated jails in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Four tables provide a national overview of facilities and inmates/residents, and eight tables present data on confinement facilities and inmates by security level of facility, size, sex of inmates housed, and facility functions. Twenty tables describe confinement and community-based facilities by region and State. A narrative summary of the tabular data is included.
