FICTIONAL CASES AKIN TO THOSE FACED BY VARIOUS CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL IN DAILY ROUTINE ARE DESCRIBED, AND THE FINAL DECISIONMAKING IN EACH INCIDENT IS LEFT TO THE READER.
Abstract
INCIDENTS WHICH HIGHLIGHT THE CORRECTIONAL IMPACT OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER ARE PORTRAYED, INCLUDING AN OFFICER'S USE OF DISCRETIONARY ARREST POWERS, THE EDUCATIONAL AND PREVENTIVE POSSIBILITIES IN AN OFFICER'S SPEAKING TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, AND THE HANDLING OF A DOMESTIC DISPUTE. THE READER IS ENCOURAGED TO IDENTIFY WITH THE CORRECTIONAL IMPACT OF COURT PERSONNEL DECISIONS AS A FAMILY COURT JUDGE DEALS WITH A CHILD ABUSE CASE. OTHER CASES REQUIRE A DECISION ON THE APPROPRIATE PURPOSE AND LIMITS OF A PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATION AND THE DISPOSITION OF THE CASE OF A REPEAT JUVENILE OFFENDER. IN ORDER TO VIEW CORRECTIONAL SITUATIONS FROM A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVES, THE READER IS USHERED INTO THE DECISIONMAKING ROLES OF THE PARENT OF A JUVENILE OFFENDER, A SCHOOL TEACHER WHO HAS A DISRUPTIVE STUDENT, THE MINISTER WITH AN EX-OFFENDER FOR A PARISHIONER, AND THE DIRECTOR OF A COMMUNITY HALFWAY HOUSE. THE READER IS ALSO ASKED TO BECOME AN INMATE MAKING DECISIONS IN VARIOUS TYPICAL PRISON SITUATIONS THAT WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON CORRECTIONAL OUTCOMES. DEMANDS ON THE TYPICAL CORRECTIONAL OFFICER ARE EXPERIENCED IN PORTRAYALS OF INCIDENTS OF CRISIS INTERVENTION, PEER GROUP PRESSURE, AND RIOT CONTROL. A VARIETY OF PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL SITUATIONS LIKELY TO BE EXPERIENCED BY A CORRECTIONAL COUNSELOR ARE PRESENTED FOR READER RESPONSE, AND THE FOLLOWING INCIDENTS ARE DEPICTED IN THE LIFE OF A CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATOR: DEALING WITH POLITICAL PRESSURES ON A CORRECTIONAL AGENCY, DEALING WITH INMATE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, AND HANDLING AN INMATE HOSTAGE-TAKING SITUATION. AN OUTLINE FOR DECISIONMAKING IS PROVIDED AT THE CONCLUSION OF EACH INCIDENT. READINGS AND SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHIES ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH MAJOR SECTION. (RCB)
