THE AUTHOR, A STAFF AIDE WITH LEAA, PROPOSES THAT FIRMER SENTENCING FOR WHITE COLLAR CRIMINAL BE ADOPTED, AND THAT SENTENCING FOR THESE CRIMINALS HAVE DETERRENCE AS ITS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE.
Abstract
IT IS NOTED THAT WHITE-COLLAR CRIMINALS RECIEVE DISPROPORTIONALLY LENIENT SENTENCES WHEN COMPARED TO THE SENTENCES OF 'STREET CRIMINALS'. THE AUTHOR MAINTAINS THAT IN LIGHT OF TE HIGH ECONOMIC COSTS AND FINANCIAL DAMAGE DONE TO ALL CITIZENS AS A RESULT OF WHITE COLLAR CRIME, WHITE COLLAR CRIMINALS DESERVE MUCH FIRMER SENTENCES. IT IS ALSO ARGUED THAT THE DETERRENT VALUE OF HARSHER SENTENCES SHOULD BE A MAJOR FACTOR IN SENTENCING, SINCE WHITE COLLAR CRIME, UNLIKE STREET CRIME, APPEARS TO RESPOND TO PUNISHMENT.
