THIS STUDY EXAMINES THE ATTRIBUTES OF SUCCESSFUL POLICE OFFICERS IN BRITAIN BY COMPARING GROUPS OF SENIOR OFFICERS ENROLLED IN THE TWO MOST ADVANCED COURSES AT THE POLICE COLLEGE.
Abstract
CHIEF INSPECTORS AND SUPERINTENDENTS WERE COMBINED INTO ONE GROUP AND COMPARED WITH A GROUP OF INSPECTORS. AMONG THE FACTORS EXAMINED WERE AGE, LENGTH OF SERVICE, THE TIME BETWEEN QUALIFYING FOR PROMOTION AND BEING PROMOTED, SERVICE IN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS, COURSES COMPLETED AT THE POLICE COLLEGE, AND SOME CAREER PATTERNS. FURTHER COMPARISONS OF THESE SAME FACTORS WERE DRAWN BETWEEN CITY, COUNTY, AND METROPOLITAN POLICE OFFICERS.
