THIS REPORT PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF EXPERIENCES ACQUIRED DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE. FOCUSING ON AN OCCUPATIONALLY RELEVANT EDUCATIONAL APPROACH, THE REPORT PRESENTS THE RATIONALE FOR SELECTION OF THE ORIENTATION, THE METHODOLOGIES USED, AND THE RESULTS.
Abstract
THE ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY OF EAST CENTRAL OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY (ECU) UNDERTOOK THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF STUDIES THAT WOULD BE OCCUPATIONALLY RELEVANT TO HUMAN SERVICES FIELDS. THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT ECU SUBMITTED AIMED (1) TO PREPARE STUDENTS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN HUMAN SERVICES PROFESSIONS, (2) TO HELP SUPPLY THE MANPOWER NEEDED TO STAFF THE INCREASING NUMBER OF PROGRAMS SERVING THE SOCIAL NEEDS OF SOCIETY, AND (3) TO PROVIDE A SOUND UNDERGRADUATE BASE FOR GRADUATE STUDIES FOR THE HUMAN SERVICES PROFESSIONS. THE CURRICULUM INCLUDED A STRONG BACKGROUND OF LIBERAL ARTS STUDIES, A CORE OF COMMON COURSES RELATING TO ALL HUMAN SERVICE OCCUPATIONS, SPECIALIZED COURSES FOR SPECIFIC AREAS OF CONCENTRATION WITHIN THE HUMAN SERVICES OCCUPATIONS, AND A BLOCK OF SPECIALLY DESIGNED AND SELECTED BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE COURSES. A MICRO-ECONOMIC/MANPOWER ANALYSIS MODEL IS PRESENTED AS A MEANS FOR ASCERTAINING THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND ATTITUDES (KSA'S) REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF THE TASKS ASSOCIATED WITH A PARTICULAR OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORY. TWO METHODS OF KSA DEVELOPMENT, THE EMPIRICAL METHOD AND THE PERCEPTUAL METHOD, WERE EMPLOYED IN THE PROJECT FOR EACH OF THREE OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORIES (ADULT OFFENDER SERVICES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND JUVENILE SERVICES--ENTRY LEVEL). FUTHERMORE, FOUR LEVELS OF EVALUATION WERE IDENTIFIED FOR THE PROGRAM (INPUT, THROUGHPUT, OUTPUT, AND IMPACT). APPENDIXES PROVIDE KSA LISTINGS AND COURSE DESCRIPTIONS. SOME COURSE DESCRIPTIONS INCLUDE REFERENCES.
