THE CARE, MAINTENANCE, AND CORRECT FIRING OF THE 9MM SMITH AND WESSON WEAPON ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
PROPER STEPS ARE DESCRIBED FOR FIELD STRIPPING (WITH THE MAGAZINE OUT), OILING, CARRYING, AND FIRING. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE PROVIDED TO ILLUSTRATE FURTHER THE STEPS IN OILING THE WEAPON. CORRECT CARRYING OF THE WEAPON IS IMPORTANT, IT IS NOTED, BECAUSE BETWEEN 1965 AND 1976, 833 POLICE OFFICERS WERE KILLED WITH HANDGUNS. OF THAT NUMBER, 137 WERE KILLED WITH THEIR OWN WEAPONS. CARRYING THE WEAPON WITH THE SAFETY ON IS URGED. A TEST OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SAFETY ON THE MODEL 39 SMITH AND WESSON REVEALED THAT 4 VETERAN POLICE OFFICERS WERE UNABLE TO FUNCTION THE MODEL 39 WITHIN 15 SECONDS FROM SAFETY. THE MODEL 10 SMITH AND WESSON, HOWEVER, WAS BROUGHT IMMEDIATELY FROM SAFETY TO OPERATION BY ALL SUBJECTS, INCLUDING A 7-YEAR-OLD. A PARTS LIST IS PROVIDED FOR THE MODEL 39 SMITH AND WESSON, INCLUDING THE NUMBER, NAME, AND PRICE OF EACH PART. SPECIFICATIONS ARE ALSO PROVIDED. (RCB)
