This article describes the AstroScope night vision model 9350NIKS-3PRO, a camera component made for nighttime photography.
Abstract
Nighttime surveillance photography requires careful planning, particularly because it is not possible to predict when a call to photograph a nighttime crime or accident scene will come. Nighttime surveillance photography requires the photographer to avoid detection, which means a flash cannot be used to illuminate the scene. Since photographers must rely on the existing ambient lighting to photograph the scene, it is crucial that the right equipment is present. The author describes the use of the AstroScope model 9350NIKS-3PRO for nighttime photography, which is made to fit Nikon camera bodies and lenses. Once AstroScope is attached to the camera, the photographer can use any lens to capture the scene. A case study in which nighttime photographs were taken of a sex predator sting operation is used to illustrate the complexities of nighttime surveillance photography and the importance of careful preparation to capturing clear and useful photographs.
